Love Tokens
Love tokens were created by bending a coin so that from the side it looked slightly like the letter 'S'. Mostly silver, I have also found a couple of bronze love tokens - for the budget romance, perhaps? Later examples were often rubbed completely smooth before being bent; earlier examples tend to still show the detail of the coin. |
A commonwealth half-groat, which has been drilled as well as bent. It looks as if the successful hole was actually the second attempt, as there is another which does not go completely through. I'm happy to report that this love token is still in working order, and now hangs from the neck of my wife. |
Bottom row, centre, is the earliest love token I have found - an Elizabeth 1st sixpence of 1579. In top left and right corners are bronze tokens, and the others are sixpences of William 3rd. |
