Groat

It's always a great feeling seeing one of these come out of the ground. They're nice big coins, and I find the design of them desperately appealing. Also, like most hammered coins, you get to find them twice - once when you dig them up, and then later when you manage to identify them.

This, in terms of hammered groats, is one of the most likely to appear - it's a 'pre-treaty' coin, type G(b), dating from between 1356 and 1361. Spink no. 1570

Half groat

Probably damaged by a plough. Spink no. 1574

Halfpenny

Second coinage, 1335-43. Spink no. 1540A
