Originally, horse brasses were highly polished in order to reflect (and therefore repel) the negative influences of evil spirits. Horses are particularly sensitive animals, and this was one of the ways intended to help them stay calm and manageable. Later, horse brasses became more and more decorative, and their original purpose was slowly forgotten. These both date from the mid 1500's.
